Week of December 16

Sunday Schedule:  Week 1, Day 1

This week's homework:  15 minutes of reading each night,  no Spelling this week (new lists will start Sunday, January 6 when we return from holiday; Spelling Test after holiday on Thursday, January 17)

IXL Math for possible extra practice: Any M  (old practice: any A, D, E, F, K.1-K.3, M.1-M.2, S.8-S.15)

Classroom Happenings:
This past week in Reader's Workshop, student's continued their work with non-fiction reading, talking about how we need to read non-fiction with the idea that we are "adding to what we already know" about a topic.  We also looked at how books about the same topic can have slightly different examples or details.  For example, in one book about tigers we learned that tigers eat buffalo and wild pigs.  In another book about tigers, we learned that tigers also eat monkeys and have even eaten a few people!

The Publishing Party to celebrate our nonfiction writing work in which we taught our audience about a topic will be on Tuesday, December 18 from 2:00-2:40.  Please come celebrate the work your child has done if you are able to attend.

Our Module 3 Math Assessment will be on Wednesday, December 19.  This will finish up our study of Place Value: Counting and Comparing Numbers to 1,000.

Reminders:
If you're looking for the 2AN Schedule, it's now posted on the Blog!  Be sure to also check the actual blog website from time to time (taism4an.blogspot.com) as the Upcoming Dates Section at the top of the blog might come in handy to fill calendars out with dates a bit ahead of time!

Birthday treats!  Let me know if you'd like to bring in birthday treats for the class!  We have 17 students in the class that are always welcoming of treats.  :)  We will typically have birthday treats at 10:15am with our snack time.  So, if you can drop them off in the morning before snack, we will enjoy them with snack.  If not, let me know so I can plan for another arrangement.  (Note:  We do not have a peanut/treenut allergy in our classroom, but we do have a few students that are to avoid nuts and beans.)

Week of December 9

Sunday Schedule:  Week 2, Day 2

This week's homework:  15 minutes of reading each night, 1 SpellingCity activity each night (new lists were handed out on Sunday, December 2; spelling test will be on Wednesday, December 12)

Classroom Happenings:
This past week in Reader's Workshop, students focused on strategies like using the whole page to gain information about a topic and being sure to not "fly by" text features, stop and see what information they can give you!

Students have been excited about our non-fiction writing unit in which they've chosen a topic to teach to their audience.  This past week, students focused on finishing up their pieces as they added Fun Facts and Glossary pages.  More information about a Publishing Party on December 18 coming soon.  The purpose of the Publishing Celebration is for students to share their work throughout the unit with you!  (The Publishing Party will be the afternoon of Tuesday, December 18.  Mark your calendars and look for more information to come!)

Math Newsletter Topic D went home with students, please let me know if you did not get one!

Reminders:
Monday, December 10 is Pajama Day!

Information about Rainbow Day was sent home last week.  Please take a look at the information and the color your student has been assigned.  (Also, please make sure the form you received has your student's name on it and you don't accidentally have someone else's!  Thank you!).  Thursday, December 13 is Rainbow Day!  Wear your color and come ready for some fun field day type team building activities!  Remember that Rainbow Day is an early 12:30 dismissal.

This past week in Reader's Workshop, students did a lot of great work studying text features of non-fiction texts.  We noticed how things like the table of contents, keywords, the glossary, photo captions (and many more!) help us understand our topics better!

Students have been excited about our non-fiction writing unit in which they've chosen a topic to teach to their audience.  This past week, one of the things we focused on was how to elaborate on our chapters by adding details, examples, and suggestions.

Math Newsletter Topic D went home with students, please let me know if you did not get one!

Spelling Practice (next two weeks)

New spelling lists were sent home this week that will run the week of November 4 and the week of November 11.  I sent a paper copy home this round so that you and your child have a hard copy of the words and the list names.  I will continue to do this to ease the process of finding lists on SpellingCity! :)  Now that you have a hard, paper copy of the words, you will easily be able to see your student's list on SpellingCity!  Keep practicing one activity per night.

Students will take their test on this set of words on Thursday, November 15.  (Note:  We did not take a test on the first list of words.  I will communicate future test dates and new lists through the weekly blog!  Hope that helps!)

Spelling City

Visit the above link on a computer or device (If asked to search for your teacher/username please use MrsANewman to find our class lists.)  Choose your list from the lists menu!  (Students will know their list/words from our practice last week.  Moving forward, I will print out paper lists for students so you have a hard copy at home for the week's practice!)

Week of October 28

Sunday Schedule:  Week 2, Day 1

This week's homework:  15 minutes of reading each night, 1 SpellingCity activity each night

IXL Math for possible extra practice:  S.8-S.15 (old practice: any A, E, F)

Classroom Happenings:
Summarize!  This is a big word we're studying with our reading work right now.  We're practicing what it means to give a summary of what we've read, making sure we're only including the important details.  We've been practicing with the Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then outline.  See if your student can summarize a short story using this outline this weekend!

We're almost published!  Our Narrative Writing has come a long way and our stories are just about finished up!  This next week, we'll be recording our stories on Book Creator so they'll be ready to share at conferences!

Math, Module 2, Topic B and Topic C newsletters went home this week.  If you did not see yours come home, please let me know!  (Math Assessments from Module 1 have been posted to SeeSaw if your student submitted their post for approval.  If not, then they will work on getting it uploaded.  I will also be showing and discussing them at conferences!)

Next week, individual Spelling Lists will come home along with instructions for how to access SpellingCity on a computer, iPad, or phone.  You choose what works best for you!  Students will be asked to practice one SpellingCity activity each night next week for practice with their individualized spelling lists!

Reminders:

Sunday Schedule:  Week 1, Day 2

This week's homework:  15 minutes of reading each night

IXL Math for possible extra practice:  any E, any F

Classroom Happenings:
In Reader's Workshop this week, we studied author's purpose, thinking, "What does the author want to teach me?" while reading.  Students worked hard on looking for the hidden messages in stories as author's don't always come out and tell us, directly, what the lesson of the story is.

In Writer's Workshop, we're working towards publishing our Narrative Writing Pieces as we start studying how to revise and edit our work to make it stronger!  Ask your student about their specific writing goals at home!

Math, Module 2, Topic A newsletter went home this week.  If you did not see yours come home, please let me know!  (Math Assessments from Module 1 will be uploaded to SeeSaw on Monday after I have a chance to review them!)

Spelling lists will be practiced in class next week and will be sent home the following week (Week of October 28) to start spelling as part of our typical homework routine.

Week of October 14

Sunday Schedule:  Week 2, Day 3

This week's homework:  15 minutes of reading each night

IXL Math for possible extra practice:  any E, any F

Classroom Happenings:
In Reader's Workshop this week, we started to take a closer look at Powerful Moments in our reading and studying the author's moves, asking ourselves questions like, "What made this moment powerful?" and, "How did the author make this moment powerful?" In this next bend of our Reader's Workshop, readers are really working on connecting their reading and writing lives, by taking what they notice when they read and trying to practice it in their own writing work!

In Writer's Workshop, we're working towards publishing our Narrative Writing Pieces as we start studying how to revise and edit our work to make it stronger!

As we move into Math Module 2 (Addition and Subtraction of Length Units), please remember to check your student's backpack for upcoming math newsletters.  Also, we did some work with the Math Practices this week and revising our first assessment.  After student's finish revisions, we will post our assessments on SeeSaw.

And.. It's been a fun week for Science in 2AN!  Students have been studying Harvest Corn and noticing what happened after our "air conditioner leaked into the Harvest Corn bucket"!  Oh, no!  We've been watching it grow, taking notes about the changes, studying the parts, and even answering some of our own wonderings as we study this phenomena!

Reminders:
Birthday treats!  Let me know if you'd like to bring in birthday treats for the class!  We have 17 students in the class that are always welcoming of treats.  :)  We will typically have birthday treats at 10:15am with our snack time.  So, if you can drop them off in the morning before snack, we will enjoy them with snack.  If not, let me know so I can plan for another arrangement.  (Note:  We do not have a peanut/treenut allergy in our classroom, but we do have a few students that are to avoid nuts and beans.)

Week of October 7

Sunday Schedule:  Week 1, Day 4

This week's homework:  15 minutes of reading each night

IXL Math for possible extra practice:  E.1, E.2, E.3, E.4, E.5, F.1, F.2, F.3, F.4, F.5

Classroom Happenings:
In Reader's Workshop this week, readers did a great job taking ownership of their reading lives by remember to stop and jot thoughts about their books as they read.  We've been practicing some specific stop and jots like predictions, questions, and tricky words, but this week students moved beyond what we practiced to realizing that they can stop and jot anytime they have a thought about their reading!

In Writer's Workshop, we're going to continue our study of narrative writing as we add more great writing moves to our toolkit, using Night of the Veggie Monster by George McClements as a second mentor text.  We're getting better at naming writing strategies they are using in their own writing!  In class we've been working on how to give a peer a compliment and a "try-to" in a helpful, coaching way.

As we move into Math Module 2 (Addition and Subtraction of Length Units), please remember to check your student's backpack next week for upcoming math newsletters.  Students will be posting their first math assessment on SeeSaw for you to see!

Reminders:
If you haven't done so already, please return the blue Child Information Form that came home on Back-to-School night or in your student's backpack.  Be sure to list the email addresses you want the blog post to be sent to on the form.  This is the email address I will use to communicate all classroom happenings.

(Note:  We do not have a peanut/treenut allergy in our classroom.)

Week of September 30

Sunday Schedule:  Week 2, Day 5

This week's homework:  15 minutes of reading each night

IXL Math for possible extra practice:  A1, A2, A3, A4, A5

Classroom Happenings:
This week students explore strategies for rolling up our sleeves and figuring out the meaning of tricky words in our Reader's Workshop.  Students are practicing strategies like using picture to determine the meaning of unknown words or using what's happening in the story to figure out the meaning of unknown words.  In Writer's Workshop, we've been using Owl Moon by Jane Yolen as a mentor text to study good writing moves.  We've been adding details to our writing by showing, not just telling a story.  One strategy we're working on is including "5 senses details" to our writing.  What did you hear?  What did you see?  What did you feel?  What did you smell?  What did you taste?

Check your student's backpack for the first Math Newsletter that was sent home!  This newsletter will be a good resource throughout the year as it outlines skills we're working on in class, as well as strategies for how children can show their thinking using models and manipulatives.  Let me know if you didn't get your copy and I can send home another!

Reminders:
Wednesday, October 3 is a half day.

If you haven't done so already, please return the blue Child Information Form that came home on Back-to-School night or in your student's backpack.  Be sure to list the email addresses you want the blog post to be sent to on the form.  This is the email address I will use to communicate all classroom happenings.

SeeSaw Access:  SeeSaw Accounts are up and running.  Students are posting weekly to their "newsfeed" with updates about what's happening in school.  Be sure to take a look at the SeeSaw Access Instructions that came home with Back-to-School night so you get an update email each time they post!  As we're getting it set up, I'm approving student posts as they come through.  (So excited to have this communication tool with home!!)

(Note:  We do not have a peanut/treenut allergy in our classroom.)

IXL Login Information

IXL Math login information is coming home this evening.  Students know that they do not have IXL homework for this week, but they are to show you the login information so you can get it set up at home.  Moving forward, I will post weekly IXL practice on the blog that coincides with our current math modules and skills.  This will be extra  practice if you choose to do it.  If IXL is ever a required homework assignment for the week, or review for an assessment, I will put it under the weekly homework assignments section on the blog.  Happy Math'ing!!

Week of September 23

Sunday Schedule:  Week 1, Day 6

This week's homework:  15 minutes of reading each night

IXL Math:  extra practice will be posted here in the future (this is not required for homework, but is always an extra option; logins and passwords coming next week as we have access to our accounts again!)

Classroom Happenings:
We're off to a great start here in 2AN!  I've really enjoyed getting to know your student these first few weeks of school and we've enjoyed building community in our classroom as we get to know each other!

Our literacy work is also off to a roarin' start!  We've been doing a lot of work with building stamina with our reading and writing independent minutes, as well as, taking responsibility of our own reading and writing lives.  Students have been practicing strategies to pick just right books for choice reading and are also practicing using stop and jots to help us think more deeply as we read.  We've also been building on our ideas in Writer's Workshop as we move into our first unit in Writer's Workshop, Improving Narrative Writing.

Here's a sample of our "stop and jot" work in Reader's Workshop.  We're working on realizing that we're always thinking when we're reading and to stop and jot when we have ideas about our reading.  Ask your student about our prediction and question stop and jots!

Our first Math Module begins with Sums and Difference to 100.  Students are using addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all posotions.

Reminders:
ASA's begin on Sunday, September 23.  Information about ASA selections was emailed to parents instead of students getting a handout this year.

Grade 2 will have DRA testing for reading on Sunday, September 23 and Monday, September 24.  This is not an assessment students can study or prepare for, but you can help your student do their best by making sure they are getting enough rest!  There will be a substitute in the classroom on both of these days so also help to remind your student to be helpful to our sub!

(Note:  We do not have a peanut/treenut allergy in our classroom.)

Week of September 16

Sunday Schedule:  Week 1, Day 1

IXL Math:  extra practice will be posted here in the future

Upcoming Events and Special Notes:
Welcome back to another school year!  I'm so happy to have met most of you on Registration Days or on Back-to-School night and am looking forward to a great year together!

And speaking of Back-to-School night, your child should have come home with three Back-to-School night handouts (Grade 2 Newsletter, SeeSaw access instructions, and a Child Information Form) if you did not attend Back-to-School night.  Please look for these in their backpack if you haven't seen them yet!  I ask that you please try to return the Child Information Form next week and be sure to list the email addresses you want the blog post to be sent to on the form.  This is the email address I will use to communicate all classroom happenings.

You will also notice books coming home in your student's backpack this weekend.  These are books from our classroom library that your student will be bringing home and can be used as a choice for their required reading minutes for homework.  Students will pick and keep at least 3 books from our library at home at all times.  These books will be at your child's just right level, a level that challenges them appropriately, and that level is assigned by me.  In having these books come home, you have access to books that you know are at their just right level, or you can compare the books they are bringing home with the books they are already reading at home.  You can also ask your student about what they know about checking books for their just right level and have them do their five finger test on books at home. (Current required homework:  15 minutes of reading at home each weekday, other various assignments will come home throughout the year)

As we're getting it set up, I'm approving student posts as they come through and your family access requests.  Be patient as these will all be approved and accepted as we move into next week!  (So excited to have this communication tool with home!!)

(Note:  We do not have a peanut/treenut allergy in our classroom.)

And, just as exciting, but not so "new"..

Our writing work will continue with our Research Writing Unit.  And, we're continuing our study of Fractions/Decimals in Math!

Reminders:
MAP testing starts next week (Grade Four Testing Schedule on the Upcoming Dates Section of taism4an.blogspot.com).

With Ramadan starting next week, please let me know if you have a student that is fasting so that I can be aware and mindful.

Reminder

In science, we've wrapped up our stream table experiments and have made it to the Final Dam Project.  For this project, students have been collaborating with their groups to build a dam using their stream table materials and the materials allotted for the project.

Students were excited to work on their initial plans this past week and were even more excited to use what they learned from their first attempt at building to make changes to their initial plans before having a second attempt at building!

We'd like to invite parents in for the afternoon of Tuesday, May 8 from 2:00-3:00 to view the second, or final, building of the dams and to see these scientists at work!  Please keep the afternoon open if interested in coming in! Sunday Schedule:  Week 2, Day 6

Upcoming Events and Special Notes:
Research, research, research!  This last week in Reader's Workshop, students did a lot of work using text structure to take meaningful notes for research on a topic they chose.  Students then took those reading skills and applied them to our Social Studies study of Oman.  Students were looking at articles about Oman, and talking about text structure with partners and using text structure organizers to take meaningful notes together.  We will continue to refine our research skills and utilize them as we study Oman and publish research projects!  Just a note:  You should have seen information for our next Informational Writing Unit come home.  The resources are also attached below.

In Math, you should have seen our Module 5 Eureka Math Tips for Parents come home this week (also attached below).  We've started our study of Fractions/Decimals!

Take a look at your student's recent updates in their ePortfolios!

Week of February 18

Sunday Schedule:  Week 1, Day 6

Upcoming Events and Special Notes:
This week our class has three more Discover Oman Experiences!  Our first experience will be visiting the Samail Castle Sunday, February 18.  Our second experience is the Wadi Sa'al Hike on Tuesday, February 20.  And, our third experience will take us to Wadi Dayqa Dam on Thursday, February 22.  Your student and I have visited about each trip (what to wear, what to expect, etc.).  However, here are just a few reminders, just in case!  Students can wear free dress on both Sunday, February 18 for the Samail Castle and on Tuesday, February 20 for our Wadi Sa'al Hike (no tank tops, shorts have to be as long or longer than TAISM PE uniform).  I suggested wearing comfortable shoes for both and long pants for our Wadi Sa'al Hike as we'll be doing a lot of walking with these two experiences and long pants on a hike helps to protect us in case we fall!  Students on these days should also remember that we will be the sun and to use precautions like sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses to stay cool and protected!  For our Wadi Dayqa Dam experience on Thursday, February 22, students are asked to wear long pants and their TAISM polo.  Also, remember to pack a snack and a lunch for each experience as we will be eating each day at the site, not at the school.

I am still looking for 3-4 volunteers for our Samail Castle experience on Sunday, February 18.  Please email me if you are available to help out!

A Few Notes

Parent/Teacher Conferences
Excited for conferences over the next two days and to share the work your student has been doing!  As these are student-led conferences, I ask that you do come with your student as they have prepared a portfolio of work to share with you.  However, I understand that schedules are busy.  If your student is unable to attend with you today because of individual circumstances, just let me know.  We can either continue with your scheduled conference time without your student, or we can reschedule for another time that your student can be present to walk you through their portfolio with me.  It's flexible, so please just let me know what works for you.

Discover Oman
Still looking for volunteers for Discover Oman!  If you're interested, please let me know if you have not done so already.

Week of February 11

Sunday Schedule:  Week 1, Day 1

Upcoming Events and Special Notes:
This week kicked off our drafting process with our Realistic Fiction pieces during Writer's Workshop.  Students have been working to expand the heart of their story and look back at strategies for how to develop writing craft further.  Reader's Workshop this week was a continuation of our study of non-fiction as we practiced taking notes in our Reader's Notebooks using structures (compare/contrast, chronological order, problem/solution, cause/effect) we find in the text to take meaningful notes.  Math this week continued work with division strategies as we move into solving multi-step story problems, practicing what we know about division and problem solving!

Next week, students will finish up Realistic Fiction drafts and work towards revising/editing for publishing.  Reader's Workshop will continue with looking at text structures to help us organize our note taking when reading non-fiction.  In Math, we'll be starting to look at vocabulary words like prime numbers, composite numbers, factors, multiples!  Exciting stuff!

Reminders:
Parent/Teacher Conferenes on February 14/15 will be a combination of student/teacher led, so your student will be coming with you to their conference this time around!  Be sure to check your email for booking an appointment online.

Our next set of Discover Oman experiences will be the week of February 18.  Permission slips went home this week.  Be sure to sign and return asap!

Our experiences this time around consist of the Samail Castle on Sunday, February 18, Wadi Sa'al hike on Tuesday, February 20, and Wadi Dayqah Dam on Thursday, February 22.  If you are interested in being a chaperone for any of the Discover Oman experiences, please email me!

Information about the Dar Al Atta'a writing competition was sent home this week, as well.  This is not a required assignment, but an option if interested!  If you did not see the information flyer, let me know and I can get you another one!

Week of February 4

Sunday Schedule:  Week 2, Day 2

Upcoming Events and Special Notes:
We had a great week in 4AN, especially with the progress we've made towards developing our Realistic Fiction work.  This past week, we worked on building on our ideas by developing characters using character charts and practicing adding action, description, dialogue, and inner thoughts and feelings to "show, not tell" our stories!  In Reader's Workshop we continued our study of non-fiction, setting up our Reader's Notebooks to take strong notes on what we're reading to grow smarter!  Students are making personal connections to non-fiction texts to determine how reading a particular non-fiction will help them learn more about a topic that matters to them, they've been previewing to predict, and using vocabulary like narrative non-fiction, expository non-fiction, and hybrid non-fiction to describe texts and determine which lens they should read through!  Ask them about their reading vocabulary regarding non-fiction!  In math, we continued our work with our multiplication/division unit, studying division strategies:  arrays, area models, and place value charts.

Ending our week with our extension of our insulator experiment in Science, students will be modeling their piece in our Insulator Fashion Show!  Look for the video this evening!

Next week, Writer's Workshop will start our drafting process as students work to expand the heart of their story, look back at strategies for how to develop writing craft further, and explore how we can use figurative language to enhance our writing.  Reader's Workshop next week will extend our study of non-fiction as we practice taking notes in our Reader's Notebooks using structures (compare/contrast, chronological order, problem/solution, cause/effect) we find in the text to take meaningful notes.  Math will continue work with division strategies as we move into solving multi-step story problems, practicing what we know about division and problem solving!

Reminders:
Parent/Teacher Conferenes on February 14/15 will be a combination of student/teacher led, so your student will be coming with you to their conference this time around!  Be sure to check your email for booking an appointment online.

Our next set of Discover Oman experiences will be the week of February 18.  Look for more information coming soon!

Insulator Fashion Show

Hope everyone had a restful and relaxing, long weekend!

Just a note about the Insulator Fashion Show happening this Thursday.. We wrapped up our science experiment on insulators last week.  As an extension to this experiment, we have an "Insulator Fashion Show" planned for Thursday.  To prepare for the Show, students will create an article of clothing (or use an item they already have) out of one of the six insulators we tested (cotton, foil, bubble wrap, wool, paper, and a synthetic material).  They came home with a planning document over the weekend and have probably already been brainstorming with your or asking for supplies!  (We showed a few examples of past year's projects in class so students have an idea of what we're looking for; it should be fairly reasonable, but please let me know if you have any questions!  We will continue with more preparation for the Show this week in class, but actual costume creating will be completed at home.)

The actual show will be this Thursday, February 1amongst the grade level.  We will share a video of it with parents when we are finished!

Week of January 14

Sunday Schedule:  Week 1, Day 6

Upcoming Events and Special Notes:
