Book Clubs!  Students are using the skills we've been studying in reading to join together for small-group book clubs.  In partners or groups of three, students will be reading together, asking questions, studying characters and their traits, and writing summaries for the class.  We were really excited to start Book Clubs!

This helped us get ready for our last writing unit, Realistic Fiction Stories!  Students have been developing real-life characters and settings and will continue to develop the problem/solution for their stories!

In Math, we are finishing out our year studying geometric shapes, how we can split those geometric shapes into equal fractions, and telling time!

All Library Books/Materials are due on Sunday, May 19.

TAISM of the Past dress day on Thursday, May 23.

We are inviting all Second Grade Parents to a final Publishing Party for the year on Thursday, May 23 from 2:00-2:30.  We'll be showing samples of work from all subjects, not just writing!  Join us if you can for a chance to sit down with your student and allow them to share their learning with you!

Second Grade Pool Party on Tuesday, May 28!  Students will be required to follow the TAISM PE Swimwear guidelines for our end of year celebration.

In Math, we will have our Module 6 Math Assessment on the foundations of multiplication on Sunday, May 12.

Ask your student about their Glue Recipe and their evidence that supports the materials they used in their mixture!  Students had a final chance this past week to make a glue that supported our design goals (sticky, strong, and spreadable).  They used their final glue to glue together a picture frame.  We also did a lesson in which we used evidence to support which materials we would use to make a toothpaste.  Now, we are not making a toothpaste in school with this science unit.. So I apologize if you have scientists wanting to create a toothpaste at home! :)

Reminders:
We are asking students to leave their soccer and other sports cards at home. There have been some problems that have come up when students trade the cards and bring the cards to recess and specials classes. In Reader's Workshop, students are working on noticing Literary Language (i.e. special language, playful language) in their books.  Students are on the look-out when they read for interesting words, made up words, how authors compare things (sizzling like a hot volcano), and what playful language really means (it's a piece of cake).  See if you can pick out some examples of Literary Language when you read at home!

In Writer's Workshop, students are working on Opinion Writing pieces.  They are writing book reviews in which they are trying to persuade their audience to read their book!

In Math, we'll be starting Module 6: Foundations of Multiplication and Division.  Students will work with concrete and pictorial (arrays) models of multiplication as they build a base of understanding!

Classroom Happenings:
This week in literacy, students focused on fluency and expression while reading.  As we're starting to tackle larger books, it's important for us to think about the sound of our voice, both while we read in our heads and out loud!  This week in writing, students also formed an opinion about a favorite book and will now work on strengthening reasons why this particular book is their favorite!

In Math Module 4, students are adding and subtracting three digit numbers, with more fluency.  See which strategy your student shows you to add 368 + 245!

Our Properties of Materials: Designing Glue Unit kicked off this past week!  Students have been tasked with designing a glue that can be used in Mr. Kriefall's Art class.  This past week, students started the engineering process by first observing and testing two different Mystery Glue substances.  This first investigation allowed students to see that different materials have different properties.

Classroom Happenings:
We've wrapped up our Poetry Units in both Reading and Writing, but I don't think this will be the end of writing poems!  Students were sad to wrap up, but know that they can always write poems about the world around them (not just when we study poetry during workshop)!

With our wrap up of Poetry, we've moved into new Literacy Units.  Our current Reading Unit is Bigger Books, Amping Up Reading Power.  This unit focuses on three aspects of reading as we are bridging into bigger books: fluency, literary language, and tracking longer stories.  Our current Writing Unit is Writing About Reading.  In this opinion writing unit, students write letters about their favorite books, formulating opinions and supporting their ideas by providing reasons and using details and examples from the text to support their claims.

In Math Module 4, students are adding and subtracting three digit numbers, with more fluency!

Next week also marks the start of our next Science Unit, Properties of Materials!

In Literacy this week, with our study of Poetry, students looked closer at how we can look at the world around us with a "poet's eye" and make our writing come to life like music with line breaks!  We also worked more with rhythm and beats in a poem and how we can read poetry with more expression!

In our Grammar Word Study, we studied adjectives this week.  See if your student can pick out adjectives in sentences you're using as you're doing everyday things!

In Math, we finished up Module 4 with our End of Module 4 Assessment on Thursday.  We'll begin our study of Module 5 (Addition and Subtraction with numbers up to 1,000) next week!

We've also started a new Science Unit which we're all really excited about!  Throughout our science unit, we'll be studying how quick and slow changes affect land.

Reminders:
Our partnership with our Courage Buddies continued this week as we attended the All School Kick-Off Assembly together on Sunday.  We're excited to join them again for the Terry Fox Run which is on Thursday, January 24.

Classroom Happenings:
New year, new units!

In Reader's and Writer's Workshop, we're launching our study of Poetry.  Throughout our reading unit, students will study poems and be able to describe how words or phrases give rhythm and meaning to a poem, story, or song.  Students will work with vocabulary like alliteration, patterns, rhymes, repeated lines, line breaks, and more.  In writing, students will be using what they learn about poetry to write their own poems and study different kinds of poems and their structures!

Students finished up some corrections with our Module 3 Math Assessment this week and will be posting their assessment on SeeSaw for your viewing.  This brings us to Module 4 in Math where we will be working with decomposing and composing in addition and subtraction with numbers up to 200.

We've also started a new Science Unit which we're all really excited about!  Throughout our science unit, we'll be studying how quick and slow changes affect land.

Reminders:
Our week started off with some exciting activities surrounding the Terry Fox Run as our class got to meet our Courage Buddies (grade 9 students)!  You may have seen the Courage Buddy bracelet come home on the wrist of your child!  The partnership with our Courage Buddies will continue throughout preparations for the Terry Fox Run which is on Thursday, January 24.

If you're looking for the 2AN Schedule, it's now posted on the Blog!  Be sure to also check the actual blog website from time to time (taism4an.blogspot.com) as the Upcoming Dates Section at the top of the blog might come in handy to fill calendars out with dates a bit ahead of time!

Birthday treats!  Let me know if you'd like to bring in birthday treats for the class!  We have 17 students in the class that are always welcoming of treats.  :)  We will typically have birthday treats at 10:15am with our snack time.  So, if you can drop them off in the morning before snack, we will enjoy them with snack.  If not, let me know so I can plan for another arrangement.  (Note:  We do not have a peanut/treenut allergy in our classroom, but we do have a few students that are to avoid nuts and beans.)
