Week of December 11

Sunday Schedule:  Week 2, Day 3

Upcoming Events and Special Notes:
All grade four students will be participating in a Science Fashion Show on Sunday, December 11.  Students have been studying states of matter and how energy (heat or the absence of heat) affects it.  In our most recent experiment, students studied insulators and determined what types of materials make the best insulators.  For our Fashion Show, students have been tasked with making a piece of clothing (or using something they already have)  and discussing its use.  Students will be describing what the item is, what it's made of, and its purpose!  It's going to be a short show with a practice run-through starting about 2:00 and the actual Fashion Show starting at 2:30 (2:30-3:00ish will be the actual Fashion Show).  If you're around and would like to come watch, you are more than welcome to drop in and join us in the Bosch Center for this short informal show!

The official holiday for Prophet Mohammed's birthday has been announced by the Omani governmental authorities as Monday, December 12; there will be no school on this day.  TAISM will resume classes on Tuesday, December 13 (Day 4).

Wednesday, December 14!  Join us for a combined Winter Party Picnic (Potluck, room parents sent out information about bringing an item to share) and Publishing Party!  Join us at the Outdoor Amphitheater (area outside the Bosch Center) from 12:30-1:15 for a picnic!  Students will have recess after this which gives parents time to clean up (or take a break!) and we invite you back inside to our classrooms at 2:00 for a celebration of our writing work, Personal/Persuasive Essays!  We will be celebrating our writing work with a gallery style showing in which grade four students will display their work, as if it were an exhibit on display at a gallery.  You and your student will have the opportunity to roam from classroom to classroom looking at "exhibits" from all the classes.  Stop in to take a look at your student's work and feel free to stay and walk around with them to check out others!

Thursday, December 15 will be a noon dismissal.  Enjoy your winter holiday from December 16-January 7!

Parents,

On November 10th from 2:30-3:30 in the Bosch Center for Performing Arts grade 3-5 students will perform a concert entitled “The Elements.” The musical afternoon will feature songs and instrumental pieces themed around each of the elements: earth, air, water, and fire. In preparation for the concert, we hope to have your support in having the children look as good as they sound. Here are the details for each class’s dress code:

Tops – long or short sleeve shirts of any material
5KR – Water (blue, dark blue, or purple)
5KK – Fire (orange, red, or yellow)
5RL – Air (light blue, grey, or white)
4CL – Water (blue, dark blue, or purple)
4BK – Fire (orange, red, or yellow)
4AN – Fire (orange, red, or yellow)
3AS – Earth (black, green, or grey)
3EY – Air (light blue, grey, or white)
3AB – Earth (black, green, or grey)

Bottoms – pants (trousers) or skirts of any material
If you do not have a material in the colors mentioned above, a neutral material/color like blue jeans, black, tan, or brown pants/skirts will help complement each class’s color pallet. Children should not wear shorts to the concert.

Shoes

Closed toes shoes (trainers/basketball shoes, smart/dress shoes, and others) are acceptable. Any color shoe that matches the child’s outfit will be best. Children should not wear sandals or crocs at the concert.

Thank you for helping us ‘dress the part’ – Your children are excited to show you what they can do!

Upcoming Events and Special Notes:
Math News Topic E is coming home in your student's mailbox today!  These Math Newsletters are a great connection from school to home; they contain notes about focus areas, key vocabulary terms we're working with, and example problems and answers.  Haven't been getting the Math Newsletters coming home in your student's backpack?  Let me know!

In other math news, our End-of-Module 1 Math Assessment will be on Thursday, October 27.  How can you help your student prepare?  (1) Continue to "be a student" while your child teaches you concepts from their Exit Tickets.  (2) Extra practice in IXL (if you choose) with categories A (number sense), B (addition), and C (subtraction).  (3) I will also be sending home some review throughout the week so you can practice with your student.

Please note that the Upcoming Events Section of the blog has an addition!  The Grade 3-5 Fall Concert is on November 10.  Check out the Elementary School Newsletter this week for more information about the concert date and time!  Mark your calendar and look for more information to follow about the dress code and details.

Homework Questions? Here's a quick check-in of what you should be seeing each night!

Sunday, October 9 Homework: Does your student's planner look like this? It should!

Please note that your student should be recording their nightly homework from our class assignment board each day.  Be sure to ask your student questions about their planner, specifically if they've filled in their homework for the evening!

Reminders
Homework will vary from night to night, but students will typically have 20 minutes of Reading and a SpellingCity Activity each night.  Additional assignments might be practicing math with IXL or teaching Exit Tickets to you.  Please email me or check the back of the weekly homework planner page if you have any questions about specific homework assignments or activities.  (I always check planners in the morning for your signature and/or notes from home!  I am also trying to do a quick check-in to make sure they've been filling it in, recording spelling words, etc.!  Together we'll get these grade fours organized and practicing life skills!)

Week of September 25

Sunday Schedule:  Week 2, Day 1

Upcoming Events and Special Notes:
Please make note that grade four students will resume MAP testing on Sunday, September 25 finishing their third and final test with math.  To help your student do their best with testing, please make sure they get a good night of sleep and a healthy breakfast!

Grade four students have class photos on Tuesday, September 27.  Students will wear a clean TAISM polo for photos.  (This will be a Day 3 on the calendar so 4AN does NOT have PE that day and will not have to worry about attire.)

Be sure to continually check the Upcoming Events list to the left as events will be continually updated in the Upcoming Events section of the 4AN blog!  More information in this section as events draw nearer!

Students came home with Math Problem Sets and Exit Tickets today.  If you did not see them in your student's backpack, they may have just forgotten them in their mailbox.  If that is the case, you will see them next week.  These come home throughout the course of the year so I ask that you take a look at a few notes about the use of these in our classroom.  Please note:  Problem Sets are used in class as practice with various strategies.  Students work on these independently as well as with a math partner; they fuel great math conversations among students!  These are not always completed in class and do NOT need to be completed and returned to me.  These are typically checked over during the course of in-class work time (you will notice that I check them at the top when I check in with your student about their work).  Exit Tickets are what I mark and review with students to determine how well they are understanding concepts after having practice with strategies on the Problem Sets.  You will see these marked by me and misconceptions addressed.  Ask your student to explain their Exit Tickets to you!  Better yet, ask them to teach you what they've learned!  You'll be amazed by some of the strategies they use!

Reminders:
Sign up in the Follow by Email section at the bottom of the 4AN blog to receive automatic updates each time the blog is updated!  Be sure to follow all the way through with instructions to confirmation!

A Great Start to the Year!

What a great start to the year in 4AN!  We've been busy getting to know each other, sharing stories from the summer, and getting to know the routines in a new classroom!

TAKE A LOOK..

Here are a few snap shots of our Summer Souvenir share!  We heard a lot of fun stories about all the wonderful places students visited over the summer and the memories that they cherished.

Not only did we get to know our classmates a little better, we also worked together to create a list of 4AN Class Agreements to help us achieve our goals this year.

Hope you enjoyed a little glimpse of our first weeks together!  We're looking forward to a great year in 4AN!

Welcome Back to the 2016-2017 School Year!

Looking forward to seeing you all at Parent Back-to-School night on Monday, September 5!  We've been busy preparing for your visit to our classroom!

End of Year Notes

There will be a combined grade four Pool Party on Wednesday, June 1.  We have discussed details in class so students know to bring swim wear (suits, swim caps for girls, flip flops, towels, change of clothes, etc.), are allowed small swim toys, and are not to bring big floating devices, squirt guns, or water balloons.  Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen for some fun (under the shaded pool) in the sun!  (Please email me regarding any concerns you may have about your child swimming; there will be a small group staying inside by request and we can add your child to that group if needed.)

Show your TAISM Spirit as we continue with our spirit days throughout the last weeks of school!  This Thursday, June 2 will be Pajama Day!  Come ready for a day of learning in your comfiest clothes ever!  Again, we've talked about this in class and students know that they should leave blankets and stuffed animals home on this day.  (Reminder that this will also be a PE day so students need to bring PE shoes and wear pajamas that still allow them to participate in class!)  And remember that the following Sunday, June 5 is Free Dress Day!

We will also be celebrating the end of the year with a combined grade four End-of-Year Party on Sunday, June 5.  On this day, students will have a pizza lunch as a grade level and enjoy a few activities together!  If you would like your student to have a home lunch or get lunch from the cafeteria instead of having pizza, this is definitely possible.  Otherwise, no need to pack a lunch or send money on Sunday!  What a fun way to kick off our last week of school!

A reminder from music class:  Mrs. Elbin has sent home information regarding the Ukulele Extravaganza taking place on Monday, June 6 in the music room from 2:20-2:45. Come watch as your student showcases all that they've learned about this fun instrument!

Some of you may have been hearing rumors of a Fashion Show taking place in grade four next week and you heard right!  A Science Fashion Show to be exact! Students have been studying various insulators (cotton, wool, synthetic, bubble wrap, aluminum foil, and paper) and are extending what they've learned in our most recent experiment.  Their goal is to try and make a piece of clothing using an effective insulator.  We're going to continue doing research and discussing various possibilities with our science groups, but students will create their item of clothing at home and will share their fashion ideas and reasons for choosing the various insulators with the other classes on Tuesday, June 7.

Our class will be viewing The Witches on Wednesday, June 8 as an extension to our read aloud.  The movie is rated PG and we're planning on watching it together as a grade four class.  If you have any reservations about your child viewing the movie, please let me know and we can find an alternate activity for them during the viewing.

I think that is it for announcements (for now!) and takes us right up to the last day of school on Thursday, June 9.  (Reminder that the last day of school is a half day.)

I've enjoyed my time with this class and will be sad to say good-bye!

Upcoming Events and Special Notes:
There is no new Homework Planner this week because of it being such a short week.  If you would like to continue with homework throughout the week, you may continue with 20 minutes of reading each night (and filling in the Reading Log) and review with IXL math, but there are not any new assignments coming home with the Homework Planner.

Week of March 20

Sunday Schedule:  Week 2, Day 6

Upcoming Events and Special Notes:
We're getting excited about our upcoming trip to the Royal Opera House!  On Tuesday, March 22, grade four students have been given the opportunity to see "The Magic Flue: or Defeating the Monsters" a re-telling of on of Mozart's most famous operas, "The Magic Flute."  This interactive opera has been designed especially for children.  Students will sing along and use props at certain times during the show to participate!  What a neat experience!  Parent Permission slips went home last week so be on the look out and get it returned to ensure they can join us on the trip!    On another note, Mrs. Elbin has been working hard with our students to study the characters and songs, and we're working on making the needed props in class.  One item 4AN students need is a flashlight so I asked all students to check at home this weekend and bring them to school next week.  If you have one or two that you can send to school, that would be great!  It would help us cover if some students don't have one.

Reminders:
Please have students wear their TAISM uniforms to the Royal Opera House on Tuesday, March 22.  Although this is typically a P.E. day, the students will miss their P.E. class due to the time of the performance and will not need to wear their P.E. uniform.  Please wear the TAISM polo and pants for the Royal Opera House on Tuesday, March 22.

This Thursday, January 14 is Rainbow Day in the Elementary School!  This means that students will be participating in team building exercises with students from their grade level and others!  Information was sent out with report cards, but here are just a few reminders.  Please remember that students should pack their own snack and sack lunch for this day as there is a picnic at the end of the event.  The picnic will be begin at 11:45 and parents are welcome to join for the picnic (or at anytime during the event to watch)!  Games will be held from 9:00-10:15 and again from 11:00-11:45.  Also note that this is an early release day.  Students will be dismissed at 12:30 so be sure to discuss any special after school plans with them (no ASAs on this day because of the early release).  Other than that, just make sure to send your student to school dressed in their specific color, athletic clothes, and closed toed athletic shoes!  Colors are posted in the classroom so students should know what color they have.

Reminders:
If you haven't done so already, please be sure to follow the 4AN Blog to stay updated about upcoming events!  To follow, scroll to the bottom of the blog and enter your email address in the Follow by Email box.  Click submit and be sure to verify your email subscription request by entering the code given and clicking on Complete Subscription Request.  You should receive an email that states that you have completed the process.  If you are having troubles subscribing, please let me know and I can assist in any way possible.  The most important piece is to make sure you follow the instructions all the way to the confirmation email.  By following the 4AN Blog with email, you will be emailed each time the blog is updated; a lot more convenient than remembering to check it!  The 4AN Blog is typically updated the last day of the week with news about the upcoming week.

The 4AN Homework Planner is another great way to stay informed about what is happening in school.  Students are filling it in with additional homework assignments and announcements about upcoming dates at school and should be getting a parent signature each night to tell me that you've seen it.  Although you can get a lot of the information from the 4AN Blog, we're really working on organization skills and independence in grade four!  The 4AN Homework Planner is a good tool to help students to stay organized and inform you about upcoming dates!
