Week of February 18

Sunday Schedule:  Week 1, Day 6

Upcoming Events and Special Notes:
This week our class has three more Discover Oman Experiences!  Our first experience will be visiting the Samail Castle Sunday, February 18.  Our second experience is the Wadi Sa'al Hike on Tuesday, February 20.  And, our third experience will take us to Wadi Dayqa Dam on Thursday, February 22.  Your student and I have visited about each trip (what to wear, what to expect, etc.).  However, here are just a few reminders, just in case!  Students can wear free dress on both Sunday, February 18 for the Samail Castle and on Tuesday, February 20 for our Wadi Sa'al Hike (no tank tops, shorts have to be as long or longer than TAISM PE uniform).  I suggested wearing comfortable shoes for both and long pants for our Wadi Sa'al Hike as we'll be doing a lot of walking with these two experiences and long pants on a hike helps to protect us in case we fall!  Students on these days should also remember that we will be the sun and to use precautions like sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses to stay cool and protected!  For our Wadi Dayqa Dam experience on Thursday, February 22, students are asked to wear long pants and their TAISM polo.  Also, remember to pack a snack and a lunch for each experience as we will be eating each day at the site, not at the school.

I am still looking for 3-4 volunteers for our Samail Castle experience on Sunday, February 18.  Please email me if you are available to help out!

A Few Notes

Parent/Teacher Conferences
Excited for conferences over the next two days and to share the work your student has been doing!  As these are student-led conferences, I ask that you do come with your student as they have prepared a portfolio of work to share with you.  However, I understand that schedules are busy.  If your student is unable to attend with you today because of individual circumstances, just let me know.  We can either continue with your scheduled conference time without your student, or we can reschedule for another time that your student can be present to walk you through their portfolio with me.  It's flexible, so please just let me know what works for you.

Discover Oman
Still looking for volunteers for Discover Oman!  If you're interested, please let me know if you have not done so already.

Week of February 11

Sunday Schedule:  Week 1, Day 1

Upcoming Events and Special Notes:
This week kicked off our drafting process with our Realistic Fiction pieces during Writer's Workshop.  Students have been working to expand the heart of their story and look back at strategies for how to develop writing craft further.  Reader's Workshop this week was a continuation of our study of non-fiction as we practiced taking notes in our Reader's Notebooks using structures (compare/contrast, chronological order, problem/solution, cause/effect) we find in the text to take meaningful notes.  Math this week continued work with division strategies as we move into solving multi-step story problems, practicing what we know about division and problem solving!

Next week, students will finish up Realistic Fiction drafts and work towards revising/editing for publishing.  Reader's Workshop will continue with looking at text structures to help us organize our note taking when reading non-fiction.  In Math, we'll be starting to look at vocabulary words like prime numbers, composite numbers, factors, multiples!  Exciting stuff!

Reminders:
Parent/Teacher Conferenes on February 14/15 will be a combination of student/teacher led, so your student will be coming with you to their conference this time around!  Be sure to check your email for booking an appointment online.

Our next set of Discover Oman experiences will be the week of February 18.  Permission slips went home this week.  Be sure to sign and return asap!

Our experiences this time around consist of the Samail Castle on Sunday, February 18, Wadi Sa'al hike on Tuesday, February 20, and Wadi Dayqah Dam on Thursday, February 22.  If you are interested in being a chaperone for any of the Discover Oman experiences, please email me!

Information about the Dar Al Atta'a writing competition was sent home this week, as well.  This is not a required assignment, but an option if interested!  If you did not see the information flyer, let me know and I can get you another one!

Week of February 4

Sunday Schedule:  Week 2, Day 2

Upcoming Events and Special Notes:
We had a great week in 4AN, especially with the progress we've made towards developing our Realistic Fiction work.  This past week, we worked on building on our ideas by developing characters using character charts and practicing adding action, description, dialogue, and inner thoughts and feelings to "show, not tell" our stories!  In Reader's Workshop we continued our study of non-fiction, setting up our Reader's Notebooks to take strong notes on what we're reading to grow smarter!  Students are making personal connections to non-fiction texts to determine how reading a particular non-fiction will help them learn more about a topic that matters to them, they've been previewing to predict, and using vocabulary like narrative non-fiction, expository non-fiction, and hybrid non-fiction to describe texts and determine which lens they should read through!  Ask them about their reading vocabulary regarding non-fiction!  In math, we continued our work with our multiplication/division unit, studying division strategies:  arrays, area models, and place value charts.

Ending our week with our extension of our insulator experiment in Science, students will be modeling their piece in our Insulator Fashion Show!  Look for the video this evening!

Next week, Writer's Workshop will start our drafting process as students work to expand the heart of their story, look back at strategies for how to develop writing craft further, and explore how we can use figurative language to enhance our writing.  Reader's Workshop next week will extend our study of non-fiction as we practice taking notes in our Reader's Notebooks using structures (compare/contrast, chronological order, problem/solution, cause/effect) we find in the text to take meaningful notes.  Math will continue work with division strategies as we move into solving multi-step story problems, practicing what we know about division and problem solving!

Reminders:
Parent/Teacher Conferenes on February 14/15 will be a combination of student/teacher led, so your student will be coming with you to their conference this time around!  Be sure to check your email for booking an appointment online.

Our next set of Discover Oman experiences will be the week of February 18.  Look for more information coming soon!
