Week of March 24

Sunday Schedule:  Week 2, Day 2

This week's homework:  15 minutes of reading each night, 1 SpellingCity activity each night (new lists were sent home on Sunday, March 17; Spelling Test on Thursday, March 28)

IXL Math for possible extra practice:  any H (old practice: any A, B, D, E, F, G, (K.1-K.3), M, (S.8-S.15)

Classroom Happenings:
This week in literacy, students focused on fluency and expression while reading.  As we're starting to tackle larger books, it's important for us to think about the sound of our voice, both while we read in our heads and out loud!  This week in writing, students also formed an opinion about a favorite book and will now work on strengthening reasons why this particular book is their favorite!

In Math Module 4, students are adding and subtracting three digit numbers, with more fluency.  See which strategy your student shows you to add 368 + 245!

Our Properties of Materials: Designing Glue Unit kicked off this past week!  Students have been tasked with designing a glue that can be used in Mr. Kriefall's Art class.  This past week, students started the engineering process by first observing and testing two different Mystery Glue substances.  This first investigation allowed students to see that different materials have different properties.

Reminders:
If you're looking for the 2AN Schedule, it's now posted on the Blog!  Be sure to also check the actual blog website from time to time (taism4an.blogspot.com) as the Upcoming Dates Section at the top of the blog might come in handy to fill calendars out with dates a bit ahead of time!

Birthday treats!  Let me know if you'd like to bring in birthday treats for the class!  We have 17 students in the class that are always welcoming of treats.  :)  We will typically have birthday treats at 10:15am with our snack time.  So, if you can drop them off in the morning before snack, we will enjoy them with snack.  If not, let me know so I can plan for another arrangement.  (Note:  We do not have a peanut/treenut allergy in our classroom, but we do have a few students that are to avoid nuts and beans.)

Week of March 17

Sunday Schedule:  Week 1, Day 3

This week's homework:  15 minutes of reading each night, 1 SpellingCity activity each night (new list will be sent home on Sunday, March 17; Spelling Test on Thursday, March 28)

IXL Math for possible extra practice:  any H (old practice: any A, B, D, E, F, G, (K.1-K.3), M, (S.8-S.15)

Classroom Happenings:
We've wrapped up our Poetry Units in both Reading and Writing, but I don't think this will be the end of writing poems!  Students were sad to wrap up, but know that they can always write poems about the world around them (not just when we study poetry during workshop)!

With our wrap up of Poetry, we've moved into new Literacy Units.  Our current Reading Unit is Bigger Books, Amping Up Reading Power.  This unit focuses on three aspects of reading as we are bridging into bigger books: fluency, literary language, and tracking longer stories.  Our current Writing Unit is Writing About Reading.  In this opinion writing unit, students write letters about their favorite books, formulating opinions and supporting their ideas by providing reasons and using details and examples from the text to support their claims.

In Math Module 4, students are adding and subtracting three digit numbers, with more fluency!

Next week also marks the start of our next Science Unit, Properties of Materials!

Week of March 10

Sunday Schedule:  Week 2, Day 4

This week's homework:  15 minutes of reading each night, 1 SpellingCity activity each night (new list was sent home on Sunday, March 3; Spelling Test on Thursday, March 14)

IXL Math for possible extra practice:  any H (old practice: any A, B, D, E, F, G, (K.1-K.3), M, (S.8-S.15)

Classroom Happenings:
In Literacy this week, with our study of Poetry, students looked closer at how we can look at the world around us with a "poet's eye" and make our writing come to life like music with line breaks!  We also worked more with rhythm and beats in a poem and how we can read poetry with more expression!

In our Grammar Word Study, we studied adjectives this week.  See if your student can pick out adjectives in sentences you're using as you're doing everyday things!

In Math, we finished up Module 4 with our End of Module 4 Assessment on Thursday.  We'll begin our study of Module 5 (Addition and Subtraction with numbers up to 1,000) next week!
