Upcoming Events and Special Notes:

Spelling words this week.. With the hustle, bustle of the Grade 3-5 Concert at the end of the day, the entire class didn't get their spelling lists checked (we got through about half!).  If you'd like to start studying over the weekend, just double check the correct spelling with your child.  Otherwise, we will finishing checking lists that didn't get correct spelling recorded on Sunday!

Reminders:
Our last week of the current Reader's Workshop schedule with parents coming in to read with students ends on Wednesday, November 22.  I will notify parents of a potential Trimester 2 schedule if 4AN decides to continue having parent volunteers for reading!

No Swimming on Thursday

As the anticipation builds for our Grade 3-5 Music Concert on Thursday, I wanted to note that 4AN will not be swimming for P.E. on Thursday.  Students will have P.E., but will have an indoor, modified class.

Also, as a result of various activities throughout the grade four swimming unit, Ms. Effie's swim unit for P.E. will be extending to Thursday, November 30.

Week of November 12

Sunday Schedule:  Week 1, Day 6

Upcoming Events and Special Notes:
Our first round of Discover Oman experiences is here!  We will have two trips starting with the Azaiba Beach Cleanup on Sunday, November 19 and ending with the National Museum of Oman/Qurum Park on Wednesday, November 22.  Students will need to pack a snack and lunch for each day as well as dress with comfortable clothing appropriate to each trip (outlined on the information sent home).  Discover Oman Parent Volunteers:  If you would like to volunteer to help chaperone one of the experiences, please let me know.

Our next planner (Trimester 2) will contain Math Newslettersstudent-facing writing checklists, and Reading Learning Progressions for current and upcoming units so you can follow our units!  Great resources for you to use to check in with your student!

ePortfolio coming soon!  We wanted to get a start with uploading our conference documents last week (Self Reflection, Module 1 Math Assessment/Rubric/Module Summary, Writing Samples/Unit Summary) but our app is not updated to work with iOS 11 update yet.  Once it is, we will get a start on uploading documents!  (I will notify you over the blog when we upload new documents; instructions for accessing the ePortfolio on the side menu of the blog).

Reminders:
Discover Oman permission slips due on Thursday, November 16.

I have been emailing my updated blog posts out to parents emails I have in my records, but if you are not getting the emails or have a different preferred email address, please let me know and I will update my list.  (Although I'm sending emails, it's still helpful to check the upcoming dates of the 4AN Blog periodically if you need a quick overview of what's to come!)

Did you see our FYI board?

Thank you for your taking the time to come in and sit down with me to look at your student's progress in learning this year!  I will be checking in with conference follow-ups in the upcoming weeks and look forward to our continued work together!

P.S. Did you take a look at our Grade 4 News/FYI board containing upcoming news and information about our current units of study when you stopped in for conferences?

Week of October 22

Sunday Schedule:  Week 1, Day 6

Upcoming Events and Special Notes:
We will be taking our End-of-Module 1 Math Assessment on Wednesday, October 25.  Math homework this week will look a little different as some extra practice/review problems will be coming home instead of IXL assignments.

Am looking for parent volunteers to come in and read with students during the independent reading portion of our Reader's Workshop.  If you are able and interested, please see details for sign up on the attached google doc (also shared via email!).  Please let me know if you are having troubles viewing or signing up.

Reminders:
Swimming in P.E. starts this week and will run from October 22 through November 22 (Note that on October 25 and on October 26 there will not be swimming due to the SAISA swim meet being held at the school.  Classes on these two dates will be outside.).

NO SCHOOL this week on Tuesday, October 24 as teachers have a day for in-service.

Take a look at the Upcoming Events section at the top of the 4AN Blog.  I have updated with a few new dates and will continue to do so!  (Will try to remind you to check it every so often!)

Upcoming Events and Special Notes:
If you are thinking about bringing Birthday Treats.. Note that we have a coconut allergy in the 4AN classroom.  Please be aware to bring treats that do not contain coconut.  I also ask that you check your ingredients for things like coconut oil, coconut milk, coconut extract, etc.  Thank you!

Will be sending Spelling Menus home periodically to save paper!  As there are 20 activities on the menu, I figure students can use the same board for about 2-3 weeks, stretching themselves to try new activities each week!  This way, students aren't using the same 4-5 activities week after week and we save paper!  I will also have a few extra copies on the bulletin board outside my classroom as well as in my extra copies pile in my classroom.  If your activity board runs out before I hand out a fresh copy, please feel free to stop by and get another one.

Reminders:
Reminder from the ES Newsletter, "We had a great response for the ES Math Night for parents.  If you are interested in attending and haven't signed up yet, please RSVP by clicking the link below:   https://goo.gl/forms/1vq1pehFmfWPax9B2

Week of September 25

Monday Schedule:  Week 2, Day 5

Week of September 17

Sunday Schedule:  Week 1, Day 6

Upcoming Events and Special Notes
Math News, Module 1, Topic A was sent home last week.  Take a look at what we're doing with Place Value of Multi-Digit Whole Numbers!  Ask your student what strategies they know and have been working on!  If you did not see this hand-out come home, please let me know!  I can send another copy home!

Homework, homework, homework... Note that our IXL activities have started to coincide with what we're doing in class.  When an IXL activity is assigned, have your student practice the concepts within that activity for about 15 minutes.  Students might not always finish the activity in the 15 minutes, but the point is not to finish, just practice and reinforce skills/strategies from class.  If they do finish before 15 minutes is up, wonderful, but they do not have to continue practice on another activity for the remaining time.

Last week students started working with spelling/vocabulary words.  They were working on prepping a different kind of spelling list for the upcoming week, individualized spelling lists that contain handpicked words from the world around them!  After our introductory lesson, students were on the look-out for words that popped up in their reading, or in conversation, and were brainstorming some of those "pesky" words that "I can just never spell correctly" to add to their lists!  They also looked inside their writer's notebooks to circle words they were unsure of how to spell.  We're trying to be observers of the spelling all around us and notice words that we find interesting or tricky so that we can study and learn them to use them in the future!

Here is our list prep from last week (studying for this upcoming week of September 17)!

How will you see spelling lists come home?  When students find a word they want to add to their list for the following week, they record it in their planner and on our class list board!  Each Thursday, your student will come home with their list for the following week in their planner.  I correct misspelled words on the class chart and students are notified to make the corrections in their planners.  So, ideally, they should be coming home with a list of 5-10 words every Thursday that are spelled correctly! ;)  Help me stay on top of our spellers and check to see that their words are spelled correctly as well?!  Students will receive a spelling menu (I'll introduce this to them on Sunday) and will be instructed to do one spelling activity per night.  I know we'll be working out kinks and questions as we get started, but I have confidence that we'll all be in the routine in no time!  We're also working on some organization pieces here at school like labeling our lists with dates so we know which week they go with and you do, too!
Note:  Students will not have spelling lists on SpellingCity (I apologize that this informational letter with log-in/password information was included in this planner because we will not be using it for class.  If you are interested in some additional spelling practice, you are able to search my pre-made lists from previous years by following the instructions on the back of your weekly planner; students do not need a SpellingCity log-in and password to access my old lists, just search MrsANewman).

Week of September 10

Sunday Schedule:  Week 1, Day 1

Upcoming Events and Special Notes
Homework Planners started this last week.  As we're getting started with planners, I understand that there will be questions and some getting used to the routine (I also understand that we'll be working out kinks with log-ins/passwords as we're getting going.).  No worries!  We'll get it all smoothed out.  You'll notice that I typically don't give homework over the weekend other than to enjoy and keep reading. ;)  I will, however, have you sign the Thursday Parent Signature section sometime this weekend.  It gives you a reminder to check the blog!  See if your student will remind you of that!  Also, see what your student can tell you about their homework planner this weekend!

Please make note of the MAP testing dates on the Upcoming Dates section of the blog.  Our grade four classes will be testing on Monday, September 11 (Reading), Wednesday, September 13 (Language), and Thursday, September 14 (Math).  To help your student do their best with testing, please make sure they get a good night of sleep and a healthy breakfast!

End of Year Notes

There will be a combined grade four Pool Party on Tuesday, June 6.  Students should bring swim wear (suits, swim caps for girls, flip flops, towels, change of clothes, etc.), are allowed small swim toys, and are not to bring big floating devices, squirt guns, or water balloons.  Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen for some fun (under the shaded pool) in the sun!  (Please email me regarding any concerns you may have about your child swimming; there will be a small group staying inside by request and we can add your child to that group if needed.)

We will also be celebrating the end of the year with a combined grade four End-of-Year Party on Wednesday, June 7.  On this day, all grade four classes will come together for a movie to kick-back, relax, and celebrate the end of a successful year of learning!  (Parents have been asked by room parents to sign-up to bring snacks for the movie.  If you've signed up to bring snacks, please bring them by 1:30pm on Wednesday.)  Treats during the movie will be in a separate classroom.  During a break in the movie, in consideration of the children fasting for the Holy Month of Ramadan, students will have a choice to go have a snack or hang out and chat in the movie room.

I think that is it for announcements (for now!) and takes us right up to the last day of school on Thursday, June 8.  (Reminder that the last day of school is a half day.)

I've enjoyed my time with this class and will be sad to say good-bye!
